Since the pandemic began the US National Eating Disorders Association has stated that there has been a steep rise in unhealthy eating habits and eating disorders in young people.
Pinterest wants their platform to be a place where people come for inspiration. Not somewhere they feel guilt or anxiety about their bodies. From the 1st of July, Pinterest banned all ads with weight loss language and imagery. So that users can focus on the things that matter most.
Pinterest is the only major platform to ban weight loss ads. However, this is just a further add-on to their policy against body shaming and dangerous weight loss products. Ads promoting healthy lifestyles or fitness products will still be allowed, as long as they don’t focus on weight loss.
