Facebook has had a long standing rule that images must not be more than 20% text. However this appears to be changing.

There has been no official statement from Facebook. But advertisers have noticed that their ads are no longer being disapproved due to text in the image. Facebook’s text overlay tool is also redirecting to a different page.

While an official statement hasn’t been put out, their documentation ‘About Text in Ad Images’ has been updated. This page now states: “We’ve found images with less than 20% text perform better.” Previously the page indicated that ads would be screened for excessive text.

This update will make it a lot easier for advertisers to use text in their imagery. Previously you would just have to upload your ad and hope that it was deemed under 20% text.
