Recently Google had announced they are using a machine-learning artificial intelligence system called “RankBrain” which will sort through the search results.
We did some research to get some tips on RankBrain to see how it works and fits in with Google’s overall ranking system.
What is RankBrain?
RankBrain is Google’s name for a machine-learning artificial intelligence system that is used to help process its search results.
What is machine learning?
Machine learning is where a computer teaches itself how to do something, rather than being taught by humans or following detailed programming.
What is artificial intelligence?
True AI is where a computer can be as smart as a human being, at least in the sense of acquiring knowledge both from being taught and from building on what it knows and making new connections.
True AI exists in Sci-Fi fiction novels. AI is used to refer to computer systems that are designed to learn and make connections.
You may hear the terms of machine learning and artificial intelligence used interchangeably, or you may hear machine learning used to describe the type of AI approach being employed.
Is RankBrain the new way google ranks search results?
No. RankBrain is part of Google’s overall search algorithm. A computer program that is used to sort through the billions of pages it knows about and find the ones deemed most relevant for particular queries.
Google does have a search algorithm under the name of “Hummingbird”
So according to reports, Hummingbird is the overall search algorithm and RankBrain is a part of that.
Hummingbird also contains other parts which may be familiar to those in SEO.
Panda, Penguin and Payday designed to fight off spam. Pigeon designed to improve local results, Top Heavy designed to remote ad-heavy pages, Mobile Friendly designed to reward mobile-friendly pages and Pirate designed to fight copyright infringement.
What exactly does RankBrain do?
According to reports again, RankBrain is mainly used as a way to interpret the search people submit to find pages that might not have the exact words that were search for.
When did RankBrain start?
There was a gradual rollout of RankBrain in early 2015 and that it’s been fully live and global for a few months now.
What does this mean for SEO?
Not a whole lot will be affected. This is an algorithm update that helps the users and gives them a better experience. It doesn’t really change how marketers should be tackling their SEO.
However perhaps in the future it is thought the increase in machine learning technologies will make the algorithm more agile and will begin to reward the marketers who are doing SEO the right way more and more.
It could just be a matter of time before the machines are fully integrated and then finally be able to stay ahead of their human counterparts.
