1. Meta Expands Ads in Threads to All Advertisers

Meta is rolling out ads in Threads to all eligible advertisers globally, enabling them to reach a growing community. Ads will appear in the Threads feed by default for new campaigns, with an option to opt out. A limited test will involve a small group of advertisers featuring image ads that meet Meta’s brand safety standards. Users will have controls over the ads they see, and an inventory filter will help manage placements.

The European Commission fined Meta €200 million and Apple €500 million for breaching data consent regulations and anti-steering obligations under the Digital Markets Act. Meta’s ‘Consent or Pay’ model did not provide users a compliant choice for less personalized services, and Apple restricted app developers from informing users about alternatives outside its App Store. Both companies must comply within 60 days or face penalties.

3. Shopify Mandates Google Tag Migration to New App

Shopify is changing its checkout process, requiring merchants to migrate their Google tags to the Google & YouTube app. Shopify Plus merchants must complete this by August 28, 2025, while non-Plus merchants have until August 26, 2026. Failure to migrate may lead to loss of conversion tracking. The app simplifies measurement setup and enhances ad capabilities. Merchants using legacy configurations must act to avoid data loss.

4. Google Ads Introduces Tree Table View for Enhanced Report Analysis

Google Ads has introduced a Tree Table View option in Reports for improved performance analysis. This hierarchical layout replaces flat tables, allowing users to visually stack dimensions, making data reading easier and saving time on reporting. Key benefits include an organized overview of multi-level dimensions, quicker insight discovery across segments, and a better structure for performance breakdowns.

5. Google Introduces AI Overviews in YouTube Search for Enhanced Video Discovery

Google is introducing AI features to YouTube search, similar to those in Google Search. A new video results carousel will appear for specific queries, using AI to highlight relevant video clips. This aims to enhance content discovery, particularly for product searches or location inquiries. The feature is currently being tested with a small group of YouTube Premium members in the US for certain English queries, allowing users to provide feedback.

6. WhatsApp Launches Advanced Chat Privacy for Enhanced Message Protection

WhatsApp offers end-to-end encryption for messages and calls, along with features like disappearing messages and chat lock. The new “Advanced Chat Privacy” setting blocks chat exports, auto-downloads, and AI usage of messages, enhancing protection in sensitive discussions. This feature is particularly useful in groups with less familiar members. Users can activate it by tapping the chat name, and it is rolling out in the latest WhatsApp version.
